Recruitment Overview

In March:
      -
The total volume of placements increased by 3%.

      - Temporary & contract placements increased by 5%.
      - Permanent placements decreased by 2%.

Temporary and contract placements were strong in March with almost all sectors experiencing an increase. The most significant increase was in the Sales & Digital Marketing sector, which saw temp and contract placements increase by 34%. Placements in the Finance & Accountancy and Construction sectors increased by 7% in March, also.

Permanent placements were less consistent in March with some winners and losers across sectors. Despite seeing the strongest increase in temp & contract placements, permanent placements decreased by 7% in the Sales & Digital Marketing sector. The strongest sectors for perm placements in March were the Engineering, Manufacturing, Logistics and FMCG sector with a 12% increase, and the Technology sector with a 10% increase

In February the Office for National Statistics and other sources reported a reduction in the number of job vacancies that have been created to date in 2024. In England, job vacancies have fallen to the lowest level in three years and it is clear that this fall is impacting the recruitment industry. While the number of jobs created is lower than in 2023, Firefish users have experienced a decrease of only 5% YOY, in comparison to a decrease of 23% nationally. In early 2024 Firefish users have also experienced an increase in the number of quality applications per job, which indicates that there is still strong candidate interest in the decreased volume of jobs available.
